About

ADEBAYO ADEFARATI

Adebayo Adefarati (14 February 1931 – 29 March 2007) was a distinguished Nigerian politician, best known for his tenure as the governor of Ondo State from 1999 to 2003. His life and career were characterized by a steadfast commitment to democratic principles and a fervent dedication to the welfare of his people.

Adefarati's political journey began with his appointment as commissioner twice under Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, where he served as the State Commissioner for Works and Transport from 1979 to 1983. During this time, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and competence in executing his duties, earning the respect of his peers and constituents alike.

However, it was his involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that solidified his reputation as a formidable force in Nigerian politics. As a prominent member of NADECO, Adefarati played a pivotal role in the struggle against the military dictatorship of Sani Abacha, advocating for the restoration of democracy and the rule of law.

Despite his contributions to the democratic cause, Adefarati's tenure as governor was not without its challenges. Political intrigues and power struggles within the state led to the alienation of many of his former allies, ultimately impacting his bid for re-election in 2003. Claims of disillusionment with his administration and concerns over the transparency of the gubernatorial candidate selection process further eroded his support base.

Nevertheless, Adefarati remained undeterred in his commitment to serving the people of Ondo State. His efforts to repair relationships with key political figures such as Chief Ruben Fasoranti and Chief Olu Falae during the election underscored his determination to unite disparate factions for the greater good of the state.

Tragically, Adefarati's aspirations for continued public service were cut short by his untimely demise in 2007, just weeks before the presidential election in which he was slated to contest as a candidate for the Alliance for Democracy party. His passing not only deprived Nigeria of a seasoned statesman but also raised questions about the electoral process.

Beyond his political endeavors, Adebayo Adefarati was a man of deep personal convictions and cultural heritage. As a native of Akungba Akoko, he held traditional titles within the Yoruba community, reflecting his esteemed status and contributions to his ancestral lineage.
