About

SYED ALI SHAH GEELANI

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, born on September 29, 1929, in the Sopore area of Jammu and Kashmir, was a prominent Kashmiri separatist leader and politician known for his unwavering commitment to Kashmiri independence. Geelani's political career was marked by his staunch advocacy for the rights of Kashmiris and their right to self-determination.

Geelani began his political journey in the 1950s, initially aligning with the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference led by Sheikh Abdullah. However, he later became disillusioned with the party's approach to the Kashmir issue and shifted towards advocating for the region's complete independence. He played a significant role in organizing protests and resistance movements, often facing imprisonment and detention for his activism.

Throughout his career, Geelani was associated with various political and religious organizations, including the Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir and the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC). He emerged as a leading figure in the Kashmiri resistance movement, advocating for the region's freedom from both Indian and Pakistani control.

Geelani's political ideology was deeply rooted in his commitment to Islam and the principles of self-determination. He argued that Kashmiris should have the right to decide their own political future through a free and fair referendum, independent of Indian and Pakistani influence.

Despite facing constant pressure and persecution from Indian authorities, Geelani remained steadfast in his advocacy for Kashmiri rights. He continued to be a vocal critic of Indian policies in Kashmir, condemning human rights violations and calling for international intervention to address the Kashmir conflict.

Geelani's influence extended beyond Kashmir, with his activism resonating among Kashmiri diaspora communities worldwide. He was seen as a symbol of resistance against oppression and a champion of Kashmiri aspirations for freedom and self-determination.

In June 2021, Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to the Kashmiri cause. His death marked the end of an era in Kashmiri politics, with many hailing him as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice for the people of Kashmir.
