About
SHEHBAZ SHARIF
Shehbaz Sharif, born on September 23, 1951, in Lahore, Pakistan, is a prominent Pakistani politician and businessman known for his extensive political career and leadership within the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N).
Sharif's early life was shaped by his family's business ventures. His father, Muhammad Sharif, established the Ittefaq Group, a large industrial conglomerate. Shehbaz Sharif received his early education at St. Anthony’s High School in Lahore and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Government College University, Lahore. After completing his education, he joined the family business, eventually becoming president of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1985.
Shehbaz Sharif's political career began in the 1980s. He was first elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in 1988, and later to the National Assembly in 1990. He served as the leader of the opposition in the Provincial Assembly of Punjab from 1993 to 1996. His first tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab began in 1997, where he focused on health, education, and infrastructure development.
Throughout his political career, Sharif has served multiple terms as Chief Minister of Punjab. His tenure is noted for significant projects, including the introduction of the Lahore Metrobus service, various educational reforms, and several energy projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). His leadership in Punjab has been marked by initiatives aimed at improving public transport, healthcare, and education, which have left a lasting impact on the province.
Sharif faced political challenges, including a period of exile from 1999 to 2007 following a military coup led by Pervez Musharraf. He returned to Pakistan and continued his political activities, eventually becoming the president of PML-N in 2018 after his brother, Nawaz Sharif, was disqualified from office.
In April 2022, following a no-confidence motion against then-Prime Minister Imran Khan, Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. His premiership has been characterized by efforts to stabilize the economy and address various governance issues. However, his tenure has also been marked by legal challenges and controversies, including accusations of corruption and money laundering, which he has consistently denied.
Shehbaz Sharif's personal life includes multiple marriages and children, with his son Hamza Shahbaz also playing a significant role in Pakistani politics. Sharif's political and personal journey reflects the complex landscape of Pakistani politics, marked by periods of significant achievement and persistent controversy.
