Stephen Miller
Introduction
About
Stephen Miller is an American political advisor and former senior advisor for policy for President Donald Trump. Born on August 23, 1985, in Santa Monica, California, Miller was raised in a liberal-leaning Jewish family. His parents, Michael and Miriam Miller, were involved in real estate, and Miller grew up in a relatively affluent environment. He attended Santa Monica High School, where he began to develop conservative political views, influenced by the writings of thinkers such as David Horowitz.
Miller attended Duke University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 2007. While at Duke, Miller was active in conservative political circles and wrote for the student newspaper, often expressing controversial views on issues such as immigration and multiculturalism. His involvement in the Duke lacrosse case, where he defended the accused players, gained him some attention in conservative media.
After college, Miller worked as a press secretary for several Republican members of Congress, including Michele Bachmann and John Shadegg. In 2009, he began working for then-Senator Jeff Sessions as communications director. During his time with Sessions, Miller played a key role in shaping the Senator’s hardline stance on immigration, a theme that would become central to Miller's political identity.
Miller joined Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 as a senior policy advisor, where he became one of the principal architects of Trump’s hardline immigration policies, including the travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries, the separation of immigrant families at the border, and the reduction of refugee admissions. Miller’s influence extended beyond immigration, as he was also involved in crafting Trump’s speeches and helping to shape the administration's overall policy direction.
Throughout his tenure in the White House, Miller was known for his combative style and his ability to influence Trump's thinking on a wide range of issues. His policies and rhetoric often drew criticism from opponents who viewed his approach as extreme and divisive. However, he remained a steadfast and influential figure within the Trump administration until its end in January 2021.
After Trump’s presidency, Miller continued to be active in conservative politics, founding America First Legal, a nonprofit organization focused on legal challenges to policies of the Biden administration. His legacy remains controversial, with supporters praising his commitment to conservative principles and critics condemning his role in shaping some of the most contentious policies of the Trump era.
