OLUREMI TINUBU
Oluremi Tinubu, born on September 21, 1960, is a notable Nigerian politician currently serving as the First Lady of Nigeria since 2023, following the election of her husband, President Bola Tinubu. She previously held the role of First Lady of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and was a senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District from 2011 to 2023. Tinubu is a dedicated member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Remi Tinubu was born into the Ikusebiala family in Ogun State, as the twelfth of thirteen children. She began her education at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode, where she completed her West African Senior Secondary School Certificate in 1979. She furthered her studies at the University of Ife, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education, and obtained a National Certificate of Education in Botany and Zoology from Adeyemi College of Education. In 2010, she also completed a Postgraduate Diploma from The Redeemed Christian Bible College.
Tinubu's entry into public service began when she became the First Lady of Lagos State during her husband's tenure as governor. In this role, she founded the New Era Foundation, which focuses on youth development and raising public awareness on environmental health and community service. Her commitment to public service led her to the Nigerian Senate in 2011, where her election was initially challenged but ultimately upheld in 2012.
During her time in the Senate, Tinubu was an advocate for various causes, including youth empowerment and public safety. In 2016, she called for increased security following threats from a fellow senator, highlighting the often tumultuous nature of Nigerian politics. She was re-elected in 2019, securing her third term in office, and continued to push for reforms, including a significant proposal to revitalize the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in 2021.
Throughout her political career, Tinubu has been recognized for her contributions. She received numerous awards, such as the National Award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and international accolades for her leadership and efforts in poverty alleviation. Her advocacy for state police as a solution to rising insecurity demonstrates her proactive approach to governance.
Beyond her political and social endeavors, Remi Tinubu is a dedicated Christian and an ordained pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, with her ordination taking place in 2018. She is also the Grand Matron of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO).
