Piers Morgan
Introduction
About
Piers Morgan, born Piers Stefan O'Meara on March 30, 1965, in Surrey, England, is a prominent British journalist, television presenter, and writer. His early life saw him educated at independent schools before attending Harlow College to study journalism.
He began his career in the field as a reporter for the South London News, eventually moving to The Sun, where he was appointed editor of the Bizarre column, covering celebrity gossip.
Morgan's big break came in 1994 when, at the age of 29, he was named editor of the News of the World by media mogul Rupert Murdoch. This appointment made him the youngest national newspaper editor in Britain in over half a century.
His tenure at News of the World was marked by aggressive journalism, but he also faced criticism for his tabloid-style tactics. In 1995, Morgan moved to the Daily Mirror, where he continued to push the boundaries of tabloid journalism, often using a populist approach and focusing on controversial stories. However, he was dismissed in 2004 after the newspaper published photographs that were later found to be fake, depicting British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners.
After leaving print journalism, Morgan shifted to television. He became well known to American audiences as a judge on the talent show America's Got Talent from 2006 to 2011. His media presence expanded when he replaced Larry King on CNN with Piers Morgan Live, a prime-time talk show that ran from 2011 to 2014. However, the show struggled with ratings, and Morgan's outspoken views on topics like U.S. gun control led to significant public backlash.
Morgan continued his television career in the UK, co-hosting ITV’s Good Morning Britain from 2015 to 2021. His confrontational interview style and controversial opinions, particularly on political and social issues, kept him in the public eye. However, his time on the show ended abruptly in 2021 after a high-profile incident where he walked off the set following a heated discussion about Meghan Markle's interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In addition to his television career, Morgan is an accomplished author. He has written several books, including his autobiographies and collections of his newspaper columns. Morgan's often polarizing presence in the media world stems from his ability to stir debate and his willingness to challenge authority, sometimes at the cost of widespread criticism.
Morgan’s career has been marked by both significant achievements and controversies, yet he remains one of the most recognizable figures in British and international media.
