Nicolas Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy is a French politician who served as the president of France from 2007 to 2012. Born in Paris, he has diverse ancestry including Hungarian Protestant, Greek Jewish, and French Catholic roots. Sarkozy began his political career as mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine and held various ministerial positions under different French governments. He was the leader of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) party before becoming president.

During his presidency, Sarkozy faced numerous challenges including economic crises, international conflicts such as the Russo-Georgian War and the Arab Spring, and initiated reforms in education and pensions. He married Carla Bruni, an Italian-French singer-songwriter, during his presidency.

Sarkozy lost the 2012 presidential election to François Hollande. After leaving office, he briefly retired from public life but returned to politics as the leader of The Republicans party. However, he was defeated in the party's presidential primary in 2016 and retired again.

In his post-presidential life, Sarkozy faced legal troubles, including corruption charges related to alleged Libyan interference in the 2007 French elections. He was convicted of corruption in two separate trials in 2021 and sentenced to prison, though he has appealed the rulings.
