About
MACKY SALL
Macky Sall, born on December 11, 1961, is a prominent Senegalese politician who has held various key positions in the government and has been serving as the President of Senegal since April 2012. He secured his re-election for a second term in the first round of voting in February 2019, showcasing his widespread popularity among the Senegalese populace. Sall's political journey is marked by significant achievements and notable contributions to the country's development.
Raised in Fatick and Futa Tooro, Macky Sall was born into a modest family to parents Amadou Abdoul Sall and Coumba Thimbo. Despite his father's affiliation with the Socialist Party of Senegal, Sall's political journey took shape during his studies at the University of Dakar, where he became involved in the Marxist-Leninist movement, And-Jëf. However, his disagreement with the movement's strategies led him to distance himself and eventually align with the liberal Abdoulaye Wade, whom he supported in the 1983 and 1988 elections.
Sall pursued his education in geological engineering at the Institute of Earth Sciences of the University of Dakar and later at the French Institute of Petroleum in Paris. Armed with his expertise, he embarked on a political career, joining Wade's Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) in the late 1980s. His ascent within the party was rapid, serving in various capacities, including as Secretary-General of the PDS Regional Convention in Fatick and as Minister of Mines, Energy, and Hydraulics.
In 2004, Sall reached a significant milestone when he was appointed as Prime Minister by President Wade, a position he held until 2007. During his tenure, he initiated several developmental projects, including the construction of the Corniche de Dakar motorway and the Blaise Diagne International Airport. Subsequently, Sall assumed the role of President of the National Assembly, where he faced political tensions with Wade's administration, leading to his dismissal from the PDS and the formation of his own party, the Alliance for the Republic (APR), in 2008.
Undeterred by challenges, Sall continued to make strides in Senegalese politics, reclaiming the mayoral position of Fatick and consolidating his support base. His perseverance paid off in 2012 when he contested the presidential elections and emerged victorious after forming a coalition of opposition candidates, signaling a shift in Senegal's political landscape. His tenure as President has been characterized by a commitment to economic development and social welfare, exemplified by initiatives such as the "Emergent Senegal" economic plan and efforts to improve healthcare access.
Sall's leadership extends beyond domestic affairs, with a focus on fostering regional and international partnerships. He has played a pivotal role in mediating conflicts in the Casamance region and has actively engaged in diplomacy, strengthening Senegal's ties with countries such as Morocco, Mauritania, and the Gambia. Furthermore, Sall's stance on global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, reflects his commitment to promoting peace and stability on the international stage.
Despite facing criticism and challenges, including protests and opposition crackdowns, Macky Sall remains steadfast in his vision for Senegal's progress. His dedication to advancing democratic principles, economic growth, and social equity has earned him recognition both at home and abroad. As he continues to lead Senegal into the future, Sall's legacy as a transformative leader committed to the welfare of his people is firmly established.
