Komla Afeke Dumor, born on October 3, 1972, in Accra, Ghana, was a distinguished Ghanaian journalist recognized for his significant contributions to the field. His impactful career included serving as the main presenter of the BBC World News program "Focus on Africa."

Dumor hailed from a family with a rich academic background. His father, Ernest Dumor, was a sociology professor, and his mother, Cecelia Dumor, held a master's degree in Mass Communication. His grandfather, Philip Gbeho, was a notable figure, the composer of the Ghanaian national anthem. Komla Dumor initially pursued pre-clinical medicine at the University of Jos, Nigeria, later graduating from the University of Ghana with a BSc. in Sociology and Psychology. Furthering his education, he earned a Master's in Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Dumor's journey in broadcasting began as the morning show host for Joy FM in Accra, Ghana. His remarkable talent earned him the title of Journalist of the Year from the Ghana Journalists Association in 2003. In 2006, he joined the BBC African Service in London as the host of the radio program "Network Africa." Dumor's influence expanded when he presented "The World Today" on the BBC World Service from 2008 to 2012. He went on to host "World News" and "Africa Business Report" on BBC World News, making significant contributions to the coverage of African news.

Komla Dumor received numerous accolades for his contributions to journalism. In December 2013, New African magazine listed him among the 100 most influential Africans of the year. His unique on-air style and influence on the portrayal of Africa in global broadcasting were acknowledged. At the time of his passing, Dumor was the only West African newsreader on BBC World News. His ability to seamlessly transition between TV and radio and shape Africa's coverage across the BBC was widely recognized.

In 2001, Dumor married Kwansema Quansah, and together they had three children: Elinam, Elorn, and Efika Aruba. Known for his Ewe heritage, Dumor left a lasting legacy in journalism. Tragically, he passed away from a heart attack on January 18, 2014, at his home in Rickmansworth, the day after being on air.

In honor of Komla Dumor's exceptional contributions, the BBC instituted the BBC World News Komla Dumor Award in 2015. This annual award recognizes outstanding individuals in Africa who exhibit strong journalism skills and have the potential to become future stars. Additionally, the Komla Dumor Memorial Foundation launched two books in February 2020, titled "The Dreamer, Komla Dumor the Boss Player in His own words" and "Komla Dumor in His Element," authored by his brother, Dr. Korshie Dumor, and his father, Professor Ernest Dumor. These initiatives stand as tributes to the enduring impact of Komla Dumor's remarkable career in journalism.
