Introduction
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is an American politician and the 46th president of the United States. Biden was born to Catherine Eugenia "Jean" Biden and Joseph Robinette Biden Sr. He was raised in a Catholic family and spent most of his childhood in Claymont, Delaware. Biden attended the University of Delaware and later Syracuse University College of Law, where he earned his law degree in 1968.
Biden began his political career as a member of the New Castle County Council in 1970 before being elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware in 1972 at the age of 29, making him one of the youngest people ever elected to the Senate. Tragedy struck shortly after his election when his wife Neilia and their daughter Naomi were killed in a car accident. Biden’s two sons, Beau and Hunter, were injured but survived. Despite this personal loss, Biden continued his Senate career, where he became known for his work on foreign relations, criminal justice, and drug policy. He served as a senator for 36 years, during which he chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and later the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
In 2008, Biden was selected as the running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. After their victory, Biden served as vice president from 2009 to 2017. During his tenure, he played a key role in the administration's efforts on the economic recovery following the Great Recession, foreign policy initiatives, and the passage of the Affordable Care Act. He also worked on issues related to violence against women and the middle class.
After leaving office, Biden remained active in public life and announced his candidacy for the presidency in 2019. In a highly contested Democratic primary, Biden emerged as the party's nominee and went on to defeat the incumbent, Donald Trump, in the 2020 presidential election. His victory was marked by a focus on unity and the promise to address the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, and racial inequality. Biden's first years in office have been shaped by significant challenges, including the pandemic response, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, and efforts to pass major infrastructure and social spending legislation.
Joe Biden's long career in politics has been marked by resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges, a commitment to public service, and a focus on issues affecting the middle class and global diplomacy. His presidency continues to influence both domestic and international policy in significant ways.
