Indira Gandhi, born Indira Nehru on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, India, was the only daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first Prime Minister, and Kamala Nehru. Her childhood was shaped by her father's political career, which often kept him away, and her mother's frequent illness, which tragically ended with Kamala's death from tuberculosis when Indira was just 13 years old. Raised in a politically charged atmosphere, Indira received her education both in India and abroad, including at Vishwa Bharati in Santiniketan and later at Somerville College, Oxford.

During her time in Britain, she met Feroze Gandhi, whom she married in 1942. The couple had two sons, Rajiv and Sanjay. Indira actively participated in the Indian freedom struggle, joining the Quit India Movement in the 1940s, which led to her imprisonment for several months. Her political career gained momentum after India gained independence in 1947. She served as her father's personal assistant and unofficial aide during his tenure as Prime Minister, learning the intricacies of governance and politics.

After Jawaharlal Nehru's death in 1964, Indira Gandhi entered formal politics, first joining the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and later taking on roles within the Indian National Congress. In 1966, she was thrust into national leadership following the sudden demise of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Despite initial skepticism from senior Congress leaders, Gandhi consolidated her position by defeating Morarji Desai to become the Prime Minister of India.

Her early years as Prime Minister were marked by both domestic challenges and significant achievements. She led India through the 1967 and 1971 wars, with the latter resulting in the creation of Bangladesh and establishing India as a dominant regional power. Gandhi's leadership during these conflicts earned her admiration and the nickname "Iron Lady."

However, her tenure also saw controversial decisions, including the imposition of Emergency in 1975 in response to political unrest and economic challenges. During this period, civil liberties were suspended, and opposition leaders were arrested, drawing criticism both domestically and internationally. The Emergency was lifted in 1977, following which Gandhi called for elections but suffered a resounding defeat, losing her seat in Parliament.

Undeterred, she regrouped and rebuilt her political career, leading the Congress (I) party to a landslide victory in the 1980 elections. Her return to power was marked by renewed economic reforms and efforts to stabilize the country after the tumultuous years of the Emergency. However, her later years were marred by escalating tensions in Punjab, culminating in Operation Blue Star, a military operation to flush out Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The controversial operation heightened Sikh separatist sentiments and ultimately led to Gandhi's tragic assassination on October 31, 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for the operation.

Indira Gandhi's assassination sent shockwaves through India and the world, leading to widespread mourning and triggering violent anti-Sikh riots across the country. Her death marked the end of an era in Indian politics, characterized by both authoritarian leadership and significant contributions to India's geopolitical stature.

Indira Gandhi remains a polarizing figure in Indian history, remembered for her strong leadership, decisive actions, and controversial policies. Her legacy as India's first and, to date, only female Prime Minister continues to influence the country's political landscape and the perception of women in leadership roles globally.
