GODSWILL AKPABIO

Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio CON, born on December 9, 1962, is a prominent Nigerian lawyer and politician currently serving as the 15th President of the Nigerian Senate since 2023. His political career has been marked by significant roles, including serving as a Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District and as the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs. Prior to his national roles, Akpabio distinguished himself as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015.

Akpabio was born to Chief Obot Akpabio and Madam Lucy Obot Akpabio in Ukana, Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area. His upbringing, shaped by the loss of his father at an early age, instilled in him resilience and determination. He received his education at Methodist Primary School, Ukana, before attending the Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, and the University of Calabar, where he obtained a Degree in Law.

Throughout his career, Akpabio has been committed to public service and has held various positions in both the public and private sectors. He served as Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources in Akwa Ibom State and later rose to become the Governor, winning two consecutive terms. As Governor, he implemented policies aimed at improving infrastructure and empowering the people of Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio's political journey continued with his election as a Senator, representing the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. He played a key role in the National Assembly, serving as the Senate Minority Leader before his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His defection marked a significant political shift and was accompanied by a rally in his hometown, Ikot Ekpene.

In 2019, Akpabio was appointed as the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, where he focused on addressing the challenges facing the Niger Delta region. However, his tenure was not without controversy, as he faced allegations of corruption and misappropriation of funds. Despite these challenges, Akpabio continued to serve in various capacities, including his recent election as President of the Senate.

Akpabio's contributions to Nigeria have been recognized both nationally and internationally. He has received numerous awards and honors for his leadership and contributions to governance, infrastructure development, and humanitarian efforts.
