Throughout his career, Akpabio has been committed to public service and has held various positions in both the public and private sectors. Akpabio's political journey continued with his election as a Senator, representing the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. He played a key role in the National Assembly, serving as the Senate Minority Leader before his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His defection marked a significant political shift and was accompanied by a rally in his hometown, Ikot Ekpene.
In 2019, Akpabio was appointed as the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, where he focused on addressing the challenges facing the Niger Delta region. However, his tenure was not without controversy, as he faced allegations of corruption and misappropriation of funds. Despite these challenges, Akpabio continued to serve in various capacities, including his recent election as President of the Senate.
