George Weah
Introduction
About
George Manneh Oppong Weah, born on October 1, 1966, is a former professional footballer and Liberian politician who serves as the current President of Liberia from 2018 to 2024. Before entering politics, he had a distinguished 18-year football career as a striker, playing for clubs in Liberia, France, Italy, and England.
Weah began his football journey in Liberia and gained international prominence when Arsène Wenger signed him for Monaco in 1988. He later played for Paris Saint-Germain, where he became the top scorer of the 1994–95 UEFA Champions League. Weah joined AC Milan in 1995, winning the Serie A twice, and received numerous awards, including the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d'Or in 1995.
After retiring from football, Weah ventured into politics. He formed the Congress for Democratic Change and ran for president in the 2005 and 2011 elections, facing challenges related to his education and citizenship. In 2014, he won a Senate seat, and in 2017, he became Liberia's president, focusing on fighting corruption, economic reform, literacy improvement, and better living conditions.
During his presidency, Weah faced economic challenges, including currency depreciation and inflation, leading to protests. He attended the National Economic Dialogue to address the crisis and proposed economic policies. His domestic policy initiatives included a 25% reduction in his salary, constitutional changes, and efforts to address healthcare issues. In foreign policy, he made official visits to Senegal, France, China, and Israel.
Weah encountered criticism for alleged violence against opposition candidates and corruption within his cabinet. Despite challenges, he addressed issues such as sexual violence, signed a drug bill into law, and recorded a song promoting unity against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Weah has four children and practiced Islam for ten years before converting to Christianity. He holds French citizenship and speaks French fluently.
