Early Life and Family Background
Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, popularly known by her stage name Ebony Reigns, was born on 16 February 1997 in Accra, Ghana. She grew up in Dansoman, one of the largest residential communities in Accra, where she became affectionately known among family and close friends as Nana Heemaa, meaning “Queen Mother.” She was the daughter of Nana Poku Kwarteng and Beatrice Oppong Marthin. Although she was raised in the bustling urban environment of Accra, Ebony traced her roots to Ghana’s Brong Ahafo Region. Her upbringing combined modern city life with strong traditional Ghanaian cultural values. From an early age, she displayed confidence, creativity, and an independent spirit that would later become hallmarks of her public image. Growing up in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ebony belonged to a generation influenced by global music trends, African popular culture, and the rapid expansion of digital media. She developed a strong interest in music, fashion, and performance long before entering the entertainment industry professionally.
Education
Ebony began her basic education at Seven Great Princess Academy in Dansoman, Accra. Teachers and classmates remember her as energetic, outspoken, and talented. She later continued her studies at Methodist Girls High School in Mamfe, located in the Akuapim North District of Ghana’s Eastern Region. Despite her academic potential, Ebony increasingly found herself drawn toward music and entertainment. Her passion for performing gradually overshadowed her interest in formal education. Eventually, she made the difficult decision to leave school before completing her studies in order to pursue a full-time music career. This choice was not without risk. Ghana’s music industry has traditionally been difficult for young female artists to penetrate, particularly those seeking to establish their own identity and artistic style. However, Ebony believed strongly in her talent and was determined to succeed.
Discovery and Entry into Music
A major turning point in Ebony’s life occurred in 2015 when she was discovered by Ogee The MC, who introduced her to Ricky Nana Agyemang, popularly known as Bullet, one-half of the musical duo Ruff n Smooth. Recognizing her exceptional talent and star potential, Bullet signed Ebony to RuffTown Records. This partnership would become one of the most important collaborations in modern Ghanaian music history. In December 2015, Ebony released her debut single, "Dancefloor."The song immediately attracted attention across radio stations and entertainment platforms. Its catchy rhythm and confident delivery showcased a fresh new voice within Ghana’s music scene. The success of "Dancefloor" earned Ebony a nomination in the Unsung Category at the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, signaling that industry professionals had begun to take notice of her growing influence.

During this period, she received numerous nominations and awards, confirming her status as one of Ghana’s leading entertainers. Many industry observers believed she was only beginning to realize her full artistic potential. At just twenty years old, Ebony had already achieved a level of fame that many artists spend decades trying to attain.
Tragic Death
The most heartbreaking chapter of Ebony’s story occurred on 8 February 2018. While returning from Sunyani to Accra after visiting her mother, Ebony was involved in a fatal road accident on the Sunyani-Kumasi Highway. The vehicle in which she was traveling collided head-on with a bus.
Ebony died instantly.

The accident also claimed the lives of:
· Franklina Yaa Nkansah Kuri (her close friend and assistant)
· Atsu Vondee (a military officer)
The only survivor was the driver, Okoh Pinehas Chartey.
Her death shocked Ghana and the broader African music community. The tragedy occurred just eight days before her twenty-first birthday and only one day before she was scheduled to embark on a music tour of Europe.

National Mourning and Funeral
Following her death, tributes poured in from musicians, politicians, religious leaders, media personalities, and fans. Memorial services were held across the country as Ghanaians reflected on her remarkable contributions to music within such a short period. Her final funeral rites were conducted at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra on 24 March 2018.

Thousands attended the ceremony, making it one of the largest funerals ever organized for a Ghanaian musician. Numerous prominent individuals and organizations contributed financially to support the funeral arrangements. Among the notable donors were:

· Various government institutions
· Private organizations and individuals
After the funeral ceremony, Ebony was laid to rest at Osu Cemetery in Accra.

In 2018, she made history by becoming the first female musician to win the prestigious Artiste of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Though her life ended tragically at the age of twenty, her influence continues to resonate through the music she created and the barriers she broke.
