BABAJIDE SAMWO-OLU

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, born on June 25, 1965, is a distinguished Nigerian politician who assumed office as the Governor of Lagos State in 2019. He emerged as the gubernatorial candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) after a surprising victory in the party's primaries, defeating the incumbent governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Educated at the University of Lagos and renowned international institutions such as the London Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Sanwo-Olu possesses a rich academic background. He holds a BSc in Surveying, an MBA, and has undergone advanced training in governance and business management.

Sanwo-Olu's professional journey spans both the private and public sectors. He has held key positions in various banking institutions, including Lead Merchant Bank, United Bank for Africa, and First Inland Bank (now First City Monument Bank). His tenure in the public service began in 2003 when he was appointed as a Special Adviser in the Lagos State government. Over the years, he served in different capacities, including Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, and Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC).

In the political arena, Sanwo-Olu's rise has been remarkable. He declared his gubernatorial ambition in 2018 and received widespread support from major stakeholders in Lagos State politics. His victory in the APC primaries and subsequent election as Governor of Lagos State demonstrated his popularity and acceptance among the electorate.

Since assuming office, Sanwo-Olu has focused on driving development initiatives across Lagos State. He has prioritized infrastructure projects, including road construction and transportation improvements, to enhance the quality of life for residents. Notable among his achievements is the commissioning of the Oshodi-Abule Egba BRT Lane, aimed at easing transportation challenges in the state.

Sanwo-Olu's leadership has not been without challenges, as he faced allegations and legal contests during his re-election bid in 2023. However, the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal affirmed his victory, solidifying his position as the duly elected Governor of Lagos State.

Outside of politics, Sanwo-Olu is a recipient of several awards recognizing his contributions to public service and governance. He is married to Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and together, they continue to serve the people of Lagos State with dedication and commitment to progress and development.
