His journey into politics began with a series of attempts to secure the governorship of Adamawa State, culminating in his successful election in 1998 before being chosen as Obasanjo's running mate in the 1999 presidential election. Despite facing setbacks in subsequent presidential bids in 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019, Abubakar has remained a formidable force in Nigerian politics.
Abubakar's childhood was shaped by his father's skepticism toward Western education. Despite initial challenges, he pursued his studies, eventually earning a diploma in Law from Ahmadu Bello University. His career commenced in the Nigeria Customs Service, where he ascended to the position of Deputy Director before transitioning into full-time entrepreneurship.
As a businessman, Abubakar diversified his interests, venturing into real estate, transportation, and education. Notably, he co-founded Intels Nigeria Limited, an oil servicing company, and established the American University of Nigeria, aiming to provide quality education in the country.
Throughout his career, Abubakar has been married four times and has a large family. His personal life reflects his desire to create a close-knit family environment, influenced by his own childhood experiences.
Despite facing accusations of corruption and controversies surrounding his political affiliations, Abubakar has remained influential in Nigerian politics. He has championed causes such as federalism and educational reform, advocating for a more decentralized government and improved educational standards.
Abubakar's contributions have earned him both national and international recognition, including traditional titles in Nigeria and honors such as the Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award from the National Peace Corps Association.
In May 2022, Abubakar was once again chosen as the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, underscoring his enduring influence and ambition in Nigerian politics
