Akshay Hari Om Bhatia, professionally known as Akshay Kumar, is a celebrated Indian actor and film producer in Hindi cinema, often referred to as "Khiladi Kumar" by the media. With a career spanning over three decades, Kumar has appeared in more than 100 films and has garnered numerous accolades, including a National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards. In 2009, he was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award.
Kumar's journey in the film industry began in 1991 with his debut in "Saugandh," but it was the 1992 action thriller "Khiladi" that established him as a formidable action star. Throughout the 1990s, he solidified his position with a series of action films, particularly the "Khiladi" series, and ventured into romantic and comedic roles in the following decade. Noteworthy performances in "Dhadkan," "Andaaz," "Namastey London," "Hera Pheri," and "Singh Is Kinng" showcased his versatility.
Despite commercial ups and downs, Kumar's consistent performances in films like "Rowdy Rathore," "Holiday," "Special 26," and "Airlift" earned critical acclaim and box office success. His role in the crime thriller "Rustom" won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Kumar's production of socially relevant films such as "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" and "Pad Man" further cemented his reputation as an actor committed to meaningful cinema.
Beyond his film career, Kumar has made significant contributions to television as the host of "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi" and "Dare 2 Dance." He has also established martial arts training schools for women and owned the Khalsa Warriors team in the World Kabaddi League. A philanthropist at heart, Kumar has supported numerous charitable causes and initiatives, including disaster relief efforts and assistance to Indian armed forces families.
Kumar's early life in Old Delhi and later in Mumbai was marked by a deep interest in sports and martial arts, influenced by his father, an army officer. His martial arts training took him to Bangkok, where he also worked as a chef and waiter. Upon returning to India, he transitioned from teaching martial arts to modeling, eventually leading to his film career.
Known for performing his own stunts, Kumar's dedication to fitness is evident in his daily regimen of martial arts, swimming, and basketball. He has also been a prominent brand endorser and a significant presence in Indian advertising.
Kumar's personal life includes his marriage to Twinkle Khanna in 2001, with whom he has two children. Despite being a Canadian citizen for a period, Kumar reaffirmed his Indian identity and regained his Indian citizenship in 2023.
