Introduction
About
Abass Chernor Bundu, born in 1948 in Gbinti, Port Loko District, is a prominent Sierra Leonean politician, diplomat, and the current Speaker of the Sierra Leone House of Parliament. He has been serving in this position since April 25, 2018. Bundu's political career spans several decades, and he holds influential positions within the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP).
Prior to becoming the Speaker of Parliament, Bundu served as the northern regional chairman of the SLPP. He is considered one of the party's most senior and influential members. Bundu's election as Speaker was marked by controversy as the main opposition party, the All-People’s Congress (APC), boycotted the process in protest and did not nominate a candidate. Nevertheless, Bundu secured the position with 70 votes from Parliament
Bundu shares a close friendship and alliance with Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio. They have a longstanding personal relationship, and Bundu's position as Speaker further solidifies his influence within the government.
Bundu's political career has been extensive and varied. From 1989 to 1993, he served as the Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He has also held several ministerial positions in Sierra Leone, including Foreign Affairs and Agriculture. In the 1996 Sierra Leone presidential election, he ran as the candidate for the now-defunct Progressive People's Party (PPP), but was defeated in the first round with 2.9% of the votes.dssffs

He is also a Barrister-at-Law.
Abass Bundu hails from a prominent Bundu family of Fula and Temne descent. He was raised in Gbinti, Port Loko District, in a deeply religious Muslim household, and he continues to practice his faith as a devout Muslim.
Throughout his career, Bundu has gained recognition as an expert in West African affairs, constitutional law, and international law. He has contributed significantly to the field and has authored works such as "Democracy by Force?" which critically analyzes the Civil War in Sierra Leone.
