Sufi Abu Taleb, born on January 27, 1925, in Tamiya, Faiyum Governorate, Egypt, was a prominent Egyptian politician and academic. After completing his secondary education, he pursued higher studies at Cairo University, where he earned a law degree in 1946 and a diploma in public law the following year. Abu Taleb's academic journey extended to France, where he attended the University of Paris, earning degrees in legal history and Roman law in 1949 and private law in 1950. He further specialized in maritime law at the University of Rome in 1959, completing his doctoral studies with distinction.

Abu Taleb had a remarkable academic career, serving as a professor and eventually the president of Cairo University. He also played a vital role in Islamic jurisprudence, contributing to the establishment of Islamic law faculties in various Arab universities, such as in Kuwait and Yemen. His commitment to education also led him to establish Fayoum University, solidifying his influence in the Egyptian academic landscape.

Politically, Abu Taleb was elected as the Speaker of the People's Assembly of Egypt in 1978, a role he held until 1983. Following the assassination of President Anwar Sadat on October 6, 1981, Abu Taleb assumed the position of acting president of Egypt for eight days, until Hosni Mubarak succeeded him. Abu Taleb's brief presidency was dictated by the Egyptian constitution, which mandated that the Speaker of the Assembly assume the interim presidency in case of a sudden vacancy.
