RAIMUNDO RODRIGUES PEREIRA

Raimundo Rodrigues Pereira, born in 1956, is a Bissau-Guinean lawyer and politician known for his two terms as interim President of Guinea-Bissau. He first assumed the role from March 3, 2009, to September 8, 2009, following the assassination of President João Bernardo Vieira. His second term came in 2012, after the passing of President Malam Bacai Sanhá, but it was cut short by a military coup.

Pereira’s political journey began with his involvement in the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). In the 2008 legislative elections, he won a seat in the National People's Assembly as a representative of the 28th constituency in Bissau. Subsequently, he was elected President of the National People's Assembly on December 22, 2008, succeeding Francisco Benante. In this role, he played a pivotal part in the country’s governance during a turbulent time.

Pereira’s first interim presidency came in the wake of the violent death of President Vieira. According to the constitution, the role of interim president fell to Pereira as President of the National People's Assembly. He was sworn in on March 3, 2009, with the mandate to organize a presidential election within 60 days. During his tenure, he emphasized the importance of international support to stabilize the nation. Despite criticism from the opposition party, the Social Renovation Party (PRS), regarding his succession, Pereira focused on fulfilling the constitutional mandate and preparing the country for elections.

Although Pereira sought the PAIGC nomination for the 2009 presidential election, he was defeated by Malam Bacai Sanhá, who later won the election and took over as president on September 8, 2009.

In 2012, Pereira once again served as interim president following the departure and subsequent death of President Sanhá. However, his term ended abruptly when he was ousted in a military coup on April 12, 2012, led by Mamadu Ture Kuruma. During the coup, Pereira and Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Júnior were detained by the military, and the event triggered widespread international condemnation, including from the African Union and the United Nations Security Council.

Pereira was eventually released and relocated to the Ivory Coast on April 27, 2012.
