Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau, born in 1942, is a prominent Mauritian politician known for her significant contributions to the country's political landscape. She served as the fourth Vice President of Mauritius from November 2010 until April 2016, making history as the first woman to hold this prestigious position. Prior to her political career, Ohsan Bellepeau had a successful background in journalism, serving as a news announcer at the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, where she gained public recognition and respect.
Her political journey took a pivotal turn in November 2010 when she was elected as Vice President following the untimely death of Angidi Chettiar. Her election was marked by unanimous support from all members of the National Assembly, highlighting her strong standing within the political community. Ohsan Bellepeau was an active member of the Mauritian Labor Party, a political group with which she had familial ties; she is the daughter of Bartholomée Ohsan, a founding member of the party. Eventually, she ascended to the presidency of the Labor Party, further solidifying her influence in Mauritian politics.
In 2012, Ohsan Bellepeau briefly stepped into the role of acting President of Mauritius following the resignation of President Anerood Jugnauth amid political tensions. She took on this responsibility again in May 2015 when President Kailash Purryag resigned, demonstrating her resilience and capability in leadership roles during transitional periods in the government.
On a personal note, Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau was married to Yves Joseph Bellepeau, a businessman, who sadly passed away just three days after she was sworn in as Vice President. Throughout her career, she has been recognized not only for her political achievements but also for her role as a trailblazer for women in leadership within Mauritius.

Monique Ohsan Bellepeau served as the President of Mauritius from January 31, 2012, to January 29, 2015. She was appointed after the resignation of Sir Anerood Jugnauth, who stepped down to facilitate her election as the new president. Ohsan Bellepeau became the first woman to hold the office of President in Mauritius. She left office upon the completion of her term on January 29, 2015, following the constitutional limit for presidential terms, and was succeeded by Kailash Purryag.
