Mohammed Karim Lamrani, born in Fes on May 1, 1919, was a distinguished Moroccan statesman and influential businessman. He served as Prime Minister on three separate occasions: initially from August 1971 to November 1972, again from November 1983 to September 1986, and finally from August 1992 to May 1994. His last term as prime minister was in a caretaker capacity, appointed to lead the government during a transitional period. Lamrani’s commitment to public service extended beyond politics, as he also held the role of Minister of Economy and Finance between 1971 and 1972.
In the business sector, Lamrani established Groupe Safari, a holding company involved in various industries including finance, distribution, and agriculture. The group, managed today by his daughter Saida, holds stakes in Crédit du Maroc, Socodam Davum, and SMEIA, the exclusive dealer of BMW and Land Rover in Morocco. Lamrani's contributions extended to the banking sector, where he played a key role in the formation of institutions like Bank Al-Maghrib and the Moroccan Bank for Foreign Trade, which strengthened Morocco's export capabilities, particularly in the phosphate industry.
Lamrani passed away on September 20, 2018, at the age of 99. His funeral in Casablanca was attended by Prince Moulay Rachid, resistance veterans, political leaders, and prominent figures from civil society, honoring his legacy as both a political leader and pioneering businessman.
