MOHAMED YUNUS AL-MENFI
Mohamed Yunus al-Menfi was born on March 3, 1976. Before entering politics, he served as Libya's ambassador to Greece, a role that brought him into the spotlight due to the tensions surrounding the Libyan Government of National Unity's (GNA) maritime agreement with Turkey. This deal, which sparked disputes between Turkey and Greece over drilling rights in the Mediterranean, led to al-Menfi being expelled from Athens in December 2019.
Al-Menfi's political career took a significant turn when he ran for the presidency of the Presidential Council in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum. His candidacy was supported by a joint ticket with Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, who became prime minister, alongside Musa Al-Koni and Abdullah al-Lafi. The ticket received 39 votes, securing their position ahead of rivals Aguila Saleh Issa and Fathi Bashagha. Following his election, al-Menfi became a key figure in Libya's ongoing efforts to establish a unified government in the lead-up to the country’s 2021 general elections.
In August 2024, al-Menfi made headlines when he dismissed Sadiq Al-Kabir, the governor of Libya's Central Bank, accusing him of mismanaging finances and exploiting the division between eastern and western Libya. This controversial decision led to the appointment of an interim governor and financial committee through a bilateral agreement between al-Menfi’s Tripoli-based government and the eastern government led by Khalifa Haftar. The deal, brokered by the United Nations, was seen as vital to preventing potential conflict over control of the central bank.
Al-Menfi's tenure has also seen efforts to improve Libya's economic prospects. Following the agreement on the central bank, he expressed optimism about diversifying the country's economy away from oil dependence. His outreach to international business communities was evident during his participation in the 2024 United Nations General Assembly, where he attended an American Chamber of Commerce event and signed agreements aimed at fostering sustainable economic development and encouraging American investment in Libya.
As of 2024, al-Menfi continues to play a critical role in Libya’s complex political landscape, working toward stability, economic reform, and a unified government.
