Moeketsi Majoro

ZODIAC ELEMENTS

Moeketsi Majoro is a prominent political figure from Lesotho, known for his role as the Prime Minister of the country. Born on November 3, 1961, in Tsikoane, a town in the Leribe District, Majoro grew up in a family that valued education. His early life and education laid the groundwork for his later political and economic career. Majoro pursued his undergraduate studies at the National University of Lesotho, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1985. His academic excellence led him to further his studies abroad. He obtained a Master's degree and later a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Washington State University in the United States.

Majoro’s professional career began in academia, where he served as a lecturer at the National University of Lesotho, imparting knowledge in economics. He later transitioned to public service, working in various capacities, including as a Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning. His expertise in economics eventually led him to join international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he served as an Executive Director.

Majoro entered the political arena in 2012 when he was appointed Minister of Development Planning in Lesotho under Prime Minister Tom Thabane’s administration. His tenure as Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2020 was marked by efforts to stabilize Lesotho's economy, improve fiscal management, and address corruption. Majoro’s technocratic approach to governance earned him respect among his peers, both domestically and internationally.

In May 2020, following the resignation of Tom Thabane amid political turmoil and allegations of involvement in the murder of his estranged wife, Majoro was appointed Prime Minister of Lesotho. His appointment came at a critical time as the country faced multiple challenges, including political instability, economic difficulties, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Prime Minister, Majoro focused on stabilizing the political landscape, promoting economic reforms, and strengthening the rule of law. Despite his efforts, his tenure was not without challenges, as he faced opposition from within his party, the All Basotho Convention (ABC), and other political factions.

Majoro's leadership style has been characterized by a blend of technocratic expertise and a commitment to public service. His time as Prime Minister saw attempts to navigate the complex political environment of Lesotho, where coalition governments and political infighting are common. While his tenure was relatively short, ending in October 2022, Majoro’s contributions to Lesotho’s political and economic landscape remain significant.
