MICHEL DJOTODIA
Michel Djotodia was born in Gordil, Vakaga, in 1949. He grew up as a member of the Muslim minority in a predominantly Christian nation. Djotodia spent approximately a decade in the Soviet Union, where he studied at the Peoples' Friendship University and became fluent in Russian. Upon returning to his homeland, he was recognized as an educated and ambitious individual, eventually working as a tax official in the 1980s and holding various positions in the Ministry of Planning and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Djotodia's political career took a significant turn when he became involved in rebel activities, co-founding the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity in 2006. After a brief imprisonment in Benin, he participated in peace talks with the Central African Republic government, which led to a national unity government. His leadership within the Séléka rebel coalition became crucial during the 2012-2013 uprising, as the group rapidly gained control over large areas of the country. Following the ousting of President François Bozizé in March 2013, Djotodia declared himself President of the Central African Republic, initiating a transitional period aimed at stabilizing the nation.
As President, Djotodia suspended the constitution and dissolved the existing government, reappointing the Prime Minister while retaining the defense portfolio. However, his presidency faced significant challenges, including escalating sectarian violence and criticism over the Séléka group's actions against civilians. Under mounting pressure, Djotodia resigned in January 2014 and went into exile in Benin. Despite the controversies surrounding his leadership, he was later reestablished as the leader of the Séléka group in 2014, reflecting his continued influence in Central African politics.
