MAMADY DOUMBOUYA

Mamady Doumbouya was born on March 4, 1980, in the Kankan Region of Guinea, and he hails from the Mandinka ethnic group. His military career began as a French legionnaire, where he achieved the rank of corporal before returning to Guinea to take command of the Special Forces Group, an elite military unit established by President Alpha Condé. His international experience, which included training in various countries, was acknowledged as he rose through the ranks. Doumbouya became a battalion commander and, over time, advanced to lieutenant colonel in 2019 and colonel in 2020. By 2024, he was promoted to general and stepped down from his role in the Special Forces Group. Throughout his 15-year military career, he participated in numerous missions across Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, the Central African Republic, Israel, Cyprus, the UK, and Guinea.

In May 2021, rumors circulated regarding a potential arrest of Doumbouya while he was in Conakry, raising questions about his position within the government. On September 5, 2021, he led a coup d'état that resulted in the detention of President Alpha Condé. Doumbouya announced the dissolution of the government and constitution on state television, justifying his actions by citing the need to address the political and economic challenges faced by Guinea. He invoked a quote from former Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings, emphasizing the army's role in securing freedom for the people when their elites fail them.

Following the coup, Doumbouya assumed the position of interim president on October 1, 2021, at the Mohammed V Palace in Conakry. He assured ministers of his authority and emphasized the junta's commitment to healthcare for the ousted president. Doumbouya dismissed concerns about potential economic sanctions from ECOWAS, focusing instead on his plans to "refound the state" and conduct transparent elections. His administration has seen significant tensions, with threats issued against anti-government protesters and allegations of human rights abuses against junta officials.

Doumbouya has engaged with various international leaders, including a meeting with Paul Kagame of Rwanda, drawing inspiration for national reform. As of February 19, 2024, he ordered the dissolution of the interim government in anticipation of upcoming presidential elections. However, his leadership has faced scrutiny, particularly following complaints related to the disappearances of opposition figures.

On a personal note, Doumbouya is married to Lauriane Darboux, an active duty member of the French National Gendarmerie, and they have four children together.
