MAHAMAT DEBY

Mahamat Déby, born in 1984, is the son of Idriss Déby, the former President of Chad, and a Gourane mother. Following his father’s footsteps, Mahamat began his military education at the Joint Grouping of Military Schools in Chad and continued his training in France at the military school of Aix-en-Provence. Upon returning to Chad, he joined the Security of State Institutions (DGSSIE), where he quickly gained recognition for his combat prowess, particularly during the 2006 rebel attack on the capital. His leadership in the Battle of Am Dam in 2009, where he played a decisive role in defeating the rebels, earned him a promotion to brigadier general. He further distinguished himself by leading Chadian special forces to victory in the Battle of Ifoghas in Mali in 2013, despite facing significant losses.

After the unexpected death of Idriss Déby in April 2021, Mahamat assumed control of Chad as the head of the Transitional Military Council, dissolving the elected government and National Assembly. Although his rise to power bypassed constitutional succession procedures, leading to widespread criticism and accusations of a coup, Mahamat's leadership was supported by France and other international actors who prioritized stability in the Sahel region.

Mahamat initially resisted negotiations with rebel groups but eventually proposed a national dialogue, which led to a peace agreement in August 2022. However, the agreement faced opposition from key political and civil society groups, leading to a postponed transition and delayed elections. The government’s response to protests against the election delays in October 2022 was marked by violent repression, resulting in numerous casualties and arrests.

Throughout his leadership, Mahamat Déby has faced significant challenges, including accusations of embezzlement, a controversial incident involving the killing of a political opponent, ongoing attacks from Boko Haram, and severe flooding in 2022. Despite these difficulties, he secured substantial backing from France, particularly during his swearing-in as president after the 2024 elections, solidifying his position as a key figure in Chad’s political landscape.
