Macky Sall, born on December 11, 1961, in Fatick, Senegal, is a prominent Senegalese politician who has been serving as the President of Senegal since April 2, 2012. His political career began in the early 1990s when he became involved with the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), led by President Abdoulaye Wade. Sall's early roles included serving as a municipal councilor and later as a deputy mayor in the town of Fatick. His rise in the political hierarchy continued as he held various positions, including Minister of Mines and Energy from 2001 to 2004 and Minister of Infrastructure from 2004 to 2007.
In 2007, Sall was appointed Prime Minister of Senegal by President Wade, a role he held until 2008. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by efforts to address infrastructural and energy issues in the country. However, his political relationship with Wade soured, leading to his dismissal from the prime ministerial position. Sall subsequently founded his own political party, the Alliance for the Republic (APR), and became a key opposition figure.
His presidential campaign in 2012 was notable for its focus on change and reform. Macky Sall won the presidency in a runoff election against the incumbent Abdoulaye Wade. His presidency has been characterized by efforts to combat corruption, improve the economy, and promote infrastructure development. Sall's administration has also been involved in regional diplomacy and peacekeeping efforts.
