Justin Lekhanya
ZODIAC ELEMENTS
Justin Metsing Lekhanya was a significant figure in Lesotho's history, particularly in the late 20th century. Born on April 7, 1938, in Thaba-Tseka, Lesotho, Lekhanya played a pivotal role in his country's political and military landscape. He began his career in the military, eventually rising to the rank of Major General in the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF). His military background positioned him as a key player in the nation's politics during a period of instability.
Lekhanya's most notable political role came when he led a coup d'état on January 20, 1986, that ousted Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan from power. This coup was significant as it ended Jonathan's long-standing rule and brought the military to the forefront of Lesotho's governance. Lekhanya assumed the role of Chairman of the Military Council and, effectively, the head of state. Under his leadership, the government sought to restore relations with South Africa, which had been strained under Jonathan's regime.
During his time in power, Lekhanya attempted to stabilize the country and improve its international standing. However, his rule was marked by challenges, including economic difficulties and internal dissent within the military. His regime was also known for its repressive measures, including the banning of political parties and the suppression of opposition.
Lekhanya's time as the head of state came to an end on May 2, 1991, when he was overthrown in another military coup led by Colonel Elias Phisoana Ramaema. After his ousting, Lekhanya remained a significant figure in Lesotho's political scene. He later served as the leader of the Basotho National Party (BNP), although his influence waned over time.
Justin Lekhanya passed away on January 20, 2021. His legacy remains complex, as he is remembered both for his role in ending Jonathan's authoritarian rule and for his own authoritarian practices during his time in power.
