INKHOSIKATI LASHONGWE
Inkhosikati LaShongwe, born Dzeliwe Shongwe in 1927, was a distinguished Queen Regent of Eswatini, holding the position from August 21, 1982, until August 9, 1983. As the wife of King Sobhuza II, she played a significant role in the nation’s history and governance. LaShongwe's tenure as regent began following the death of her husband, when the Royal Congress appointed her to oversee the kingdom until the king’s successor, Prince Makhosetive, came of age.
During her regency, LaShongwe faced notable challenges, including political disagreements with her Prime Minister, Mabandla Dlamini, and other key figures within the government. These tensions culminated in March 1983, when Prince Mabandla was replaced by Prince Bhekimpi Dlamini, leading to further disputes and LaShongwe’s eventual replacement by Ntfombi of Eswatini later that year.
Her period of regency was marked by her efforts to navigate the complexities of the political landscape, culminating in the coronation of her successor, King Mswati III, on April 25, 1986. Queen Dzeliwe’s contributions extended beyond her regency, as she also held the post of Joint President of the National Congress between 1981 and 1985.
Following her removal from the regency, she was a significant figure in Eswatini’s political and royal circles until her death in 2003. Her legacy remains an integral part of the nation’s history, reflecting her dedication to her royal duties and her role in shaping the future of Eswatini.

GOVERNING TIME LINE
Inkhosikati LaShongwe assumed the regency following the death of her husband, King Sobhuza II, during a time when the designated heir, Prince Makhosetive, was not yet of age. Her appointment was supported by the Liqoqo, a traditional advisory body, and she was advised by Prince Sozisa Dlamini. However, her tenure was marked by political disagreements within the Royal Congress, particularly concerning the dismissal of Prime Minister Mabandla Dlamini. These tensions culminated in her being replaced by Ntfombi of Eswatini, the mother of Prince Makhosetive, as regent in August 1983.
