Hifikepunye Pohamba is a Namibian politician who served as the second President of Namibia from March 21, 2005, to March 21, 2015. Born on August 18, 1935, in Okanghudi in northern Namibia, Pohamba was a key figure in the country's liberation struggle against South African rule. He was one of the founding members of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), which was established to advocate for Namibia’s independence.
Pohamba's political activism began in the 1960s, and he was arrested and imprisoned multiple times by the South African authorities for his involvement in anti-colonial activities. Despite this, he remained committed to the cause of Namibian independence and continued to play a significant role in SWAPO. After Namibia gained its independence in 1990, he became a central figure in the new government under President Sam Nujoma.
During his tenure as President, Pohamba was known for his moderate and pragmatic leadership style. He emphasized national reconciliation, economic development, and the fight against corruption. His leadership was marked by stability and a commitment to democratic principles. Pohamba was re-elected in 2009 with a large majority and continued to work towards improving Namibia's infrastructure and social services. In 2015, Pohamba stepped down after serving two terms as president, in accordance with Namibia's constitutional term limits.
Pohamba's leadership was internationally recognized, and in 2014, he was awarded the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, a prestigious award given to African leaders who have demonstrated excellence in governance and leadership.
