Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

ZODIAC ELEMENTS

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, born on November 29, 1955, in the town of Jalalaqsi, Hiran, Somalia, is a prominent Somali politician and academic who has held the office of President of Somalia twice. His early life was shaped by the political turbulence of Somalia, experiencing the effects of the collapse of the Somali state in the early 1990s. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud pursued higher education and eventually graduated from Somali National University with a degree in technology and later studied technical education at Bhopal University in India, graduating in 1988. His academic and professional background helped him emerge as a strong voice in Somali civil society.

After the collapse of Somalia's central government, Hassan became active in education and peace-building efforts. He co-founded the Somali Institute of Management and Administration Development (SIMAD) in 1999, which evolved into SIMAD University, a major educational institution in Mogadishu. His work in civil society and education established his reputation as a committed peace advocate and a professional with strong community ties, preparing him for a transition into politics. He also worked with various NGOs and the United Nations, engaging in programs focused on education and community development.

In 2012, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud entered politics, running as a candidate in Somalia's presidential elections. His campaign focused on restoring peace and order, rebuilding state institutions, and addressing the country’s corruption issues. On September 10, 2012, he was elected the 8th President of Somalia by the Federal Parliament of Somalia, succeeding the Transitional Federal Government. His election marked a turning point in Somali politics, as it was one of the first peaceful transfers of power in recent years. Mohamud’s administration prioritized security reforms, worked to strengthen the Somali National Army, and engaged in dialogue with the international community to attract support for reconstruction and state-building.

Despite his ambitions for national reform, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s first term faced challenges, including persistent threats from Al-Shabaab, the Islamist militant group, and issues of federalism, which often created tension between the central government and regional states. His government also faced criticism over corruption and political infighting, which hindered progress in several areas. However, he made notable achievements in laying the groundwork for governmental institutions and improving Somalia’s international relations.

In 2017, he ran for re-election but was defeated by Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, also known as Farmaajo. Nevertheless, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud remained active in Somali politics, and in 2022, he ran again for the presidency. On May 15, 2022, he won the election, marking a historic return to office, becoming the first Somali president to be elected to a non-consecutive second term. His second administration has continued to focus on similar priorities, including federalism, security, economic development, and institutional reforms, with an increased emphasis on reconciliation among Somalia’s different political factions.

As of recent years, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is focused on fostering greater national unity and strengthening Somalia's political institutions to ensure sustainable development. His leadership is viewed as integral to Somalia’s ongoing efforts to achieve stability and counter-terrorism measures, as the country works to overcome decades of conflict and rebuild its national identity.
