FOUAD MEBAZAA
Fouad Mebazaa, born on June 15, 1933, is a notable Tunisian politician who served as the acting president of Tunisia from January 15 to December 13, 2011. His political journey began during the French occupation of Tunisia when he became involved with the Neo Destour party, a key player in the country’s independence movement. Mebazaa joined the "constitutional youth" in 1947 and quickly advanced within the party, becoming Secretary-General of the Marsa unit in 1955 and later the President of its Montpellier unit in 1956.
After Tunisia gained independence in 1956, Mebazaa was elected to the Chamber of Deputies multiple times, starting in 1964. He served as the Governor-Mayor of Tunis from 1969 to 1973 and held several ministerial roles related to youth, sports, public health, and culture throughout the 1970s and late 1980s. Additionally, he represented Tunisia as an ambassador in both Geneva and Morocco during the 1980s. Mebazaa was an influential member of the Central Committee of the Constitutional Democratic Rally from 1988 onward. His political career also included serving as the Mayor of Carthage from 1995 to 1998, and he was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1997, a position he held until 2011.
Mebazaa's presidency commenced amidst the Tunisian Revolution, which saw the departure of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14, 2011. The following day, Mebazaa, in his capacity as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, was appointed as acting president by the Constitutional Council, following the stipulations of the 1959 Constitution. As acting president, he sought to stabilize the country, announcing improvements in the security situation and committing to a government that respected its obligations in stark contrast to the previous regime.
On February 9, 2011, he oversaw the passage of legislation allowing him to govern by decree until new elections could be organized. He also announced the formation of a Constituent Assembly to draft a new constitution, emphasizing the need for political reform to align with the aspirations of the Tunisian people. His term concluded on December 12, 2011, when he handed over power to Moncef Marzouki, marking the end of a significant chapter in Tunisia's political landscape. Reference:
