Félix Antoine Tshilombo Tshisekedi is a Congolese politician who has served as the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since January 24, 2019. Born on June 13, 1963, in Kinshasa, Félix Tshisekedi is the son of Étienne Tshisekedi, a prominent opposition leader and founder of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party. Félix Tshisekedi grew up in the political environment shaped by his father's activism against the dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko and later against other regimes.
Félix Tshisekedi joined his father's party, the UDPS, at a young age, becoming an active member in the struggle for democracy in the DRC. His political career began in earnest in the early 2000s when he started to rise through the ranks of the UDPS. After the death of his father in 2017, Félix Tshisekedi became the party's leader and was subsequently chosen as its presidential candidate.
In the controversial December 2018 election, Félix Tshisekedi was declared the winner, despite allegations of widespread irregularities and accusations of a secret deal with the outgoing president, Joseph Kabila. His victory was contested by the opposition candidate, Martin Fayulu, who claimed he had won the election. Nevertheless, Tshisekedi assumed the presidency, marking the first peaceful transition of power in the DRC’s history.
Tshisekedi’s presidency has been marked by efforts to tackle corruption, improve governance, and restore security in the eastern regions of the DRC, which have been plagued by armed conflict for decades. He has also sought to strengthen ties with neighboring countries and the international community while promoting economic development and investment in the country.
Félix Tshisekedi’s tenure has faced numerous challenges, including internal political tensions, continued violence in the east, and criticism over the slow pace of reforms. Nonetheless, his leadership represents a significant shift in Congolese politics, especially given the long-standing dominance of the Kabila regime.
