FELIX MALLOUM
Félix Malloum was born on September 10, 1932, in Fort Archambault, French Chad. He was a prominent Chadian military officer and politician. Trained at the French military academy, Malloum saw action in Indochina and Algeria before rising through the ranks of the Chadian military. By 1972, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and held the rank of colonel. However, his career took a dramatic turn in 1973 when he was arrested and imprisoned by President François Tombalbaye on charges of conspiracy.
Malloum's fortunes changed following the successful coup d'état on April 13, 1975, which ousted Tombalbaye. Malloum emerged as the new leader of Chad, assuming both the roles of President and Prime Minister. His leadership was marked by efforts to stabilize the country, particularly through attempts to integrate northern rebels into the government. However, these efforts faced significant challenges, culminating in the appointment of Hissène Habré as Prime Minister on August 29, 1978. Despite this, Malloum struggled to maintain control, and after signing the Kano Peace Agreement, he resigned from the presidency on March 23, 1979, allowing the formation of a provisional government.
After leaving office, Malloum retired from politics and lived in Nigeria for 23 years before returning to Chad's capital, N'Djamena, in 2002. Upon his return, he received the benefits accorded to former presidents, including a residence, a stipend, and health coverage. Félix Malloum passed away on June 12, 2009, at the age of 76 in Paris, France, after suffering cardiac arrest.
