EVARISTO CARVALHO
Evaristo Carvalho was a notable São Toméan politician, born on October 22, 1941. He served as Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe twice, first from July 7, 1994, to October 25, 1994, and again from September 26, 2001, to March 28, 2002. Carvalho was affiliated with the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party.
In the 2011 presidential election, while serving as President of the National Assembly, Carvalho ran for office with the support of then Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. He finished second in the first round of voting with 21.8% of the vote, losing to former president Manuel Pinto da Costa, who won the runoff election.
Carvalho's political career saw a significant moment in July 2016 when he won the most votes in the presidential election, though he did not achieve an outright majority. The runoff election scheduled for August 7, 2016, was disrupted by the withdrawal of incumbent President Pinto da Costa, who alleged election fraud. This development led to Carvalho's inauguration as president on September 3, 2016. The election process was praised internationally for its commitment to democratic values.
Evaristo Carvalho passed away on May 28, 2022, at the age of 80, following a prolonged illness. Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaristo_Carvalho
