DRISS JETTOU

Driss Jettou was born on May 24, 1945, in El Jadida, Morocco. He completed his secondary education at El Khawarizmi College in Casablanca, obtaining a technical Baccalauréat in mathematics in 1964. Jettou furthered his education at the Faculty of Sciences of Rabat University, graduating in physics and chemistry in 1966. He also earned a diploma in adjustment and management from the Cordwainers Colleges in London in 1967.

From 1968 to 1993, Jettou held various managerial roles in several Moroccan companies. He served as president of the Moroccan Federation of Industries of Leather and was a member of the General Confederation of Enterprises in Morocco. He later became vice-president of the Moroccan Association of Exporters. His contributions to Moroccan industry earned him the Grand Chevalier of the Wissam of the Throne. He received further recognition in 2008 when King Mohammed VI awarded him the grand cordon of Wissam Al Arch during the Throne Festival. Additionally, he was honored with the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella in 2005 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Carlos III in 2010, acknowledging his exceptional service to Spain and its citizens.

Jettou's political career began in 1993 when King Hassan II appointed him as Minister of Trade and Industry. He held the position of Minister of Economy and Finance from August 1997 to March 1998 and later served as Minister of Interior from 2001 in the cabinet of Abderrahmane Youssoufi. On October 6, 2002, King Mohammed VI appointed him as Prime Minister, despite his lack of affiliation with any political party at the time. He led a coalition government, primarily comprising the Socialist Union of Forces for Progress and the Istiqlal Party. During his tenure, Jettou successfully negotiated a historic free trade agreement with the United States in late 2004.

Following the parliamentary elections in September 2007, he was succeeded by Abbas El Fassi, the leader of the Istiqlal Party, as Prime Minister. On August 9, 2012, he was appointed President of the Audits Court, a position seen as part of King Mohammed VI's efforts to strengthen control over corruption cases. In December 2019, Jettou was appointed to the Special Committee on the Model of Development by the king, reflecting his continued involvement in shaping Morocco's economic and political landscape.
