Danny Faure is a prominent Seychellois politician who served as the fourth President of Seychelles, guiding the nation through a significant period of its history. His political journey began in 1985 when he started working as an assistant curriculum officer at the Seychelles Ministry of Education. With a strong educational background, including a degree in political science from the University of Havana, Faure quickly rose through the ranks of the government, demonstrating a deep commitment to public service.
In 1993, following the return of multiparty democracy to Seychelles, Faure became the leader of government business in the National Assembly, a role he held until 1998. His impressive career trajectory saw him take on various ministerial roles, including youth, finance, trade, industries, public administration, and information and communication technology. As Minister of Finance, Faure played a pivotal role in implementing the economic reforms recommended by the International Monetary Fund, which were crucial in stabilizing the country's economy.
Faure’s leadership qualities and dedication to his country were further recognized when he was appointed Vice President of Seychelles in 2010, a position he held while continuing to oversee the finance portfolio. His political acumen was highlighted when President James Michel announced his resignation in 2016, paving the way for Faure to assume the presidency. As President, Faure was known for his commitment to environmental conservation, notably making a global impact with his underwater speech in 2019, advocating for the protection of the world’s oceans. His efforts in environmental leadership were recognized when he was awarded the National Geographic Society’s prestigious ‘Planetary and Leadership Award’ the same year.
Faure’s presidency, however, came to an end in October 2020 when he lost the presidential election to opposition candidate Wavel Ramkalawan.
