Carlos Vila Nova is a São Toméan politician who serves as the fifth president of São Tomé and Príncipe. CARLOS VILLA NOVA
Carlos Vila Nova was born on July 27, 1959, in Neves, located in the Lembá District of São Tomé Island. He pursued higher education in telecommunications engineering, earning his degree from the University of Oran in Algeria in 1985. Upon his return to São Tomé, he took on the role of head of the computer department at the government Statistics Directorate. In 1988, Vila Nova transitioned to the private sector as a sales manager at the Hotel Miramar, the only hotel in the country at that time, and he advanced to become the hotel’s director in 1992. He later directed the Hotel Pousada Boa Vista in 1997 and founded his own travel agency, Mistral Voyages, continuing his focus on the tourism industry until he shifted to politics in 2010.
Entering the political arena, Vila Nova served as the Minister of Public Works and Natural Resources in Patrice Trovoada's cabinet from 2010 until the government lost its majority in 2012. He was reappointed as Minister of Infrastructure, Natural Resources, and the Environment when Trovoada's Independent Democratic Action party regained majority control in 2014. In 2018, he was elected to the National Assembly and later emerged as the ADI's candidate for the presidential election in 2021.
