Bassirou Diomaye Faye, born on March 25, 1980, in Ndiaganiao, Senegal, is a prominent Senegalese politician and the fifth President of Senegal. He was elected in March 2024, becoming the first opposition candidate to win an election in the first round since Senegal's independence in 1960. Prior to his presidency, Faye was a tax inspector and an active member of the PASTEF party (Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité), which was founded by Ousmane Sonko in 2014. Faye rose to prominence as the general secretary of PASTEF, advocating for political and economic reforms in Senegal.

Faye pursued his education in Senegal, attending Marie Médiatrice Catholic School in his hometown and Lycée Demba Diop in Mbour, where he graduated in 2000. He later earned a master's degree in law from the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar and trained as a tax inspector at Senegal's National School of Administration. He is a practicing Muslim, with two wives, Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye, and four children.

Faye's political career is closely tied to his work alongside Ousmane Sonko. Together, they advocated against corruption and the political status quo in Senegal. In 2019, Sonko ran for president and placed third. Although unsuccessful, he continued to grow in popularity, especially among Senegal's youth. However, Sonko was later arrested under politically controversial charges, which led Faye to step forward as the "Plan B" candidate for the opposition.

In the 2024 presidential election, Faye ran as an independent after PASTEF was dissolved. He was endorsed by Ousmane Sonko and other key political figures. His campaign focused on job creation, combating corruption, and reforming energy contracts. Faye's slogan, "Diomaye mooy Ousmane," highlighted his deep connection to Sonko and his alignment with the opposition's ideals. After securing over 54% of the vote, Faye was inaugurated as President of Senegal on April 2, 2024.

Faye's presidency began with efforts to audit Senegal's mining, oil, and gas sectors while welcoming foreign investment. His government also emphasized reducing presidential powers and tackling corruption. Faye quickly appointed Sonko as Prime Minister, a strategic move to consolidate the opposition's influence within the government. His administration is viewed as a new chapter in Senegalese politics, with a strong push for sovereignty and left-wing pan-Africanism, aiming to challenge the influence of former colonial powers, especially France.

Faye continues to shape Senegal's political landscape, with early reforms and strategic international engagements, including efforts to reintegrate military-ruled West African nations into regional organizations like ECOWAS.
