BARLEN VYAPOORY

Paramasivum Pillay "Barlen" Vyapoory, born in 1945 or 1946, is a notable Mauritian politician and diplomat with a significant career in public service. A member of the Militant Socialist Movement, Vyapoory has dedicated much of his life to advancing Mauritius's political and diplomatic interests.

His diplomatic experience includes serving as the High Commissioner of the Republic of Mauritius to South Africa, where he represented his country and strengthened bilateral relations. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles in various organizations, demonstrating his commitment to both domestic and international affairs.

Following the resignation of Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, Vyapoory took on the responsibilities of acting president of Mauritius. He held this position until his resignation on 26 November 2019. His tenure, although brief, was marked by his efforts to maintain stability during a transitional period in Mauritian politics.

GOVERNING TIME LINE

Barlen Vyapoory served as the Acting President of Mauritius from March 23, 2018, to November 2, 2019. He assumed office following the resignation of Ameenah Gurib-Fakim amid a scandal involving misuse of a credit card. Vyapoory, who was the Vice President at the time, took over as Acting President in accordance with the constitutional procedure. He remained in office until November 2, 2019, when Prithvirajsing Roopun succeeded him as the President of Mauritius.
