Azzedine Laraki

Azzeddine Laraki was a Moroccan politician who served as the tenth Prime Minister of Morocco from September 30, 1986, to August 11, 1992, under King Hassan II. He also made history as the first Moroccan to serve as Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) from 1997 to 2000.

AZZEDDINE LARAKI

Azzeddine Laraki, born on May 1, 1929, in Fes, Morocco, was a Moroccan physician and statesman. He pursued medicine in Paris, obtaining his doctorate in 1957, and later returned to Morocco, where he served as deputy chief medical officer in Oujda, director of Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, and professor at the Faculty of Medicine.

Laraki entered public service early, first with roles in the Ministries of National Education and Public Health. He served as Minister of Education from 1976 to 1987, where he worked on Arabizing the Moroccan education system, and later served as Prime Minister from 1986 to 1992. He also held various international positions, including vice-president of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1985 and later Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in 1996.

In addition to his public roles, Laraki published medical and literary research and was involved with national and international scientific societies. He passed away in Rabat on February 1, 2010, at age 81.
