Ali Bongo Ondimba was born Alain Bernard Bongo on February 9, 1959, in Brazzaville, French Equatorial Africa (now the Republic of Congo). He is the son of Omar Bongo Ondimba, Gabon's second president who ruled for nearly 42 years. Ali Bongo grew up in a politically influential family and later converted to Islam, adopting the name Ali. He was groomed for leadership from an early age, having received a Western education in France and earning a law degree from the Sorbonne.
Ali Bongo's political career began under the shadow of his father. In 1989, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until 1991. After a brief period of political reform in Gabon in the early 1990s, he served as Minister of Defense from 1999 to 2009. He played a central role in maintaining the Bongo dynasty, even as Gabon transitioned into a multi-party political system【9†source】.
In 2009, following the death of his father, Ali Bongo was elected president. His victory was controversial, with accusations of electoral fraud and manipulation. Despite widespread protests and challenges, he was sworn into office and set out to modernize Gabon. He focused on diversifying the economy beyond oil and implemented several ambitious infrastructure projects. However, his rule was marked by increasing centralization of power, and many accused him of maintaining a political system that favored a small elite【10†source】【11†source】.
Bongo was re-elected in 2016 in another hotly contested election, defeating opposition leader Jean Ping by a razor-thin margin. His second term saw continued political unrest, particularly around accusations of authoritarianism and allegations of corruption. He suffered a stroke in 2018, which kept him out of the public eye for several months, raising concerns about his health and ability to govern【11†source】.
In 2023, Ali Bongo sought a third term in office. Despite winning the election with 64.27% of the vote, the results were contested, and a military coup took place, annulling the election and ending his 14-year presidency. This marked the end of the Bongo family's long-standing rule in Gabon.

GOVERNING TIME LINE
Ali Bongo Ondimba assumed the presidency of Gabon on October 16, 2009, following his election as the country's leader after the death of his father, Omar Bongo, who had ruled for over four decades. His inauguration marked the continuation of the Bongo family’s political dominance in Gabon. Bongo’s time in office was characterized by a mix of political stability, economic growth, and allegations of corruption and political repression. On August 30, 2023, nearly 14 years into his presidency, Ali Bongo was overthrown in a military coup following controversial elections earlier that month, which had raised widespread accusations of fraud. The coup led to his removal from office and the installation of a new military-led government, effectively ending his rule and the Bongo family's long-standing control of Gabon’s political scene.
