AGUILA SALEH ISSA
Aguila Saleh Issa, born on January 11, 1944, in Al Qubbah, Libya, has played a significant role in the country's turbulent political landscape. He was elected Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives following the 2014 parliamentary elections. However, after militias seized control of Tripoli, he, along with other members of the House, was forced to flee to Tobruk.
In February 2015, Saleh’s residence in Al Qubbah became a target of a deadly bombing carried out by ISIL militants. The attack, which also targeted a petrol station and police station, resulted in at least 40 fatalities, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Libya since the end of the 2011 civil war. ISIL claimed responsibility for the bombings, framing it as retaliation for Egypt's military involvement in Libya.
On September 20, 2021, Aguila Saleh announced his candidacy for the Libyan presidency in the upcoming 2021 general election, choosing to temporarily step down from his parliamentary role to pursue this bid. However, the election was delayed due to ongoing disputes over the election's legal framework and security challenges, with no clear resolution reached at the time.
By early 2022, Saleh returned to his position as Speaker of the House, amid ongoing political gridlock and an uncertain path forward for the country’s leadership. He has continued to assert that the government’s legitimacy hinges on a transparent and lawful electoral process, which remains unfulfilled.
