ABDERRAHMANE YOUSSOUFI

Abderrahmane Youssoufi was born in Tangier and became an influential socialist leader from a young age, actively organizing the working class in Casablanca as early as 1944. By 1949, he was advocating for the rights of Moroccan immigrants in France while studying law, practicing in Tangier from 1952 to 1960. The son of a Berber family, he spoke Tamazight and French until he learned Arabic upon starting school.

Youssoufi's political journey began with his involvement in the Army of Liberation alongside notable figures like Fqih Basri. Inspired by Mehdi Ben Barka, he joined the Al Istiqlal Party, dedicating himself to the struggle for Moroccan independence. His nationalism earned him the nickname "Lenin" from the Moroccan police, and he faced imprisonment for his political activities. In 1959, he co-founded the National Union of Popular Forces, a left-wing party, but was arrested for his involvement in the following years. After a two-year prison sentence in 1963, he entered self-imposed exile in Paris for fifteen years.

Upon his return to Morocco, Youssoufi became a key figure in the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, serving on its political bureau and eventually becoming its secretary after the death of Abderrahim Bouabid in 1992. In 1983, he helped establish the Arab Organization for Human Rights, emphasizing his commitment to civil liberties.

On February 4, 1998, following a successful election for his party, King Hassan II appointed Youssoufi as Prime Minister. His government focused on increasing freedoms for citizens and the media. After his party was re-elected in 2002, he stepped down in favor of technocrat Driss Jettou later that year. Youssoufi announced his retirement from politics in February 2005 and lived in Casablanca until his passing on May 29, 2020, at the age of 96 due to lung cancer. His funeral took place in Casablanca's Chouhada cemetery, attended by a small number of relatives due to pandemic restrictions.
