Abdelmadjid Tebboune

ZODIAC ELEMENTS

Abdelmadjid Tebboune, born on November 17, 1945, in Mécheria, French Algeria, is an Algerian politician who has served as the President of Algeria since December 19, 2019. Tebboune's political career spans several decades and includes various key government positions.

Tebboune started his career in public service after graduating from the National School of Administration in 1969. He held various local government positions before moving into national politics. In the 1980s and 1990s, he served in several ministerial roles, including as Minister of Communication and Culture and Minister of Local Government. His rise in politics continued during the presidency of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, where he became Minister of Housing and Urban Development from 1999 to 2002, a period that saw a large focus on housing projects aimed at alleviating Algeria's housing shortage.

His most notable tenure prior to becoming president was as Prime Minister of Algeria, albeit briefly, from May to August 2017. During this time, he attempted to reform Algeria’s economy, particularly by targeting business oligarchs and corruption within the country’s financial sector. However, his premiership ended after just three months, a result of internal political dynamics and pressure from powerful interests tied to the country's business elite.

Tebboune’s rise to the presidency came amidst a period of significant unrest in Algeria, known as the Hirak movement, where mass protests called for the end of the ruling elite’s long-standing dominance over Algerian politics. Following Bouteflika’s resignation in 2019 after 20 years in power, Tebboune announced his candidacy for the presidency. Despite some opposition from protestors, who viewed him as part of the old guard, Tebboune won the presidential election in December 2019 with around 58% of the vote.

As president, Tebboune has focused on several key areas. He has pledged to reform the constitution to address issues related to governance, rule of law, and civil liberties, and to bring Algeria’s economy away from its heavy reliance on hydrocarbons. He also promised to fight corruption and initiate policies that would benefit Algeria's youth, a significant portion of the population. However, his presidency has faced continued protests from the Hirak movement, and the economic and social challenges remain significant.

Tebboune’s administration has also had to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, which further strained the Algerian economy. Internationally, Tebboune has worked to maintain Algeria's traditional non-aligned foreign policy stance, emphasizing independence from foreign influence while strengthening ties with regional and international partners.
