ABDELILAH BENKIRANE

Abdelilah Benkirane, born in 1954 in Rabat, Morocco, is a prominent Moroccan politician known for serving as the Prime Minister from 2011 to 2017. He began his political career in the 1970s as a leftist and Islamist activist and became a member of parliament for Salé in 1997. In 2008, he was elected leader of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).

Under his leadership, the PJD won a plurality in the 2011 parliamentary elections, leading to the formation of a coalition government. As Prime Minister, Benkirane focused on economic growth and reducing unemployment while strengthening ties with the European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council. He was re-elected in 2016 but faced difficulties in forming a government, leading to his ousting by King Mohammed VI in March 2017 after a prolonged political deadlock.

Following his tenure, Benkirane briefly stepped back from politics but returned as secretary-general of the PJD in 2021 after the party's electoral loss. He comes from a family originally from Fes and draws inspiration from his father, who influenced his beliefs. Married to a party activist, he has six children, including a daughter with special needs.

GOVERNING TIME LINE

Abdelilah Benkirane served as Prime Minister of Morocco from November 29, 2011, to March 17, 2017. He was appointed following the 2011 Moroccan constitutional referendum, which was held in response to the Arab Spring protests. The referendum granted expanded powers to the prime minister, and Benkirane's party, the Justice and Development Party (PJD), won the most seats in the subsequent parliamentary elections.

He was dismissed on March 17, 2017, after failing to form a government following the 2016 parliamentary elections, in which the PJD retained a plurality. His inability to secure a coalition agreement, primarily due to disagreements with other parties, led to his departure. King Mohammed VI appointed Saadeddine Othmani as his successor.
