Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab

Abdel Rahman Suwar al-Dahab was a Sudanese military leader who briefly served as Head of State from 1985 to 1986. He led Sudan’s transitional government following the ousting of Gaafar Nimeiry, overseeing a peaceful transition to civilian rule within a year.

ABDEL RAHMAN SWAR AL-DAHAB

Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab, born in 1934 in Omdurman, Sudan, was a prominent Sudanese military leader known for his commitment to democratic transition. After graduating from the Sudanese Military Academy, he expanded his military training internationally in the UK, US, Egypt, and Jordan. President Gaafar Nimeiry appointed him Chief of Staff and later, Minister of Defense and general commander of Sudan’s armed forces in 1984.

In 1985, Swar al-Dahab led a coup that removed Nimeiry from power. As Chairman of the Transitional Military Council, he oversaw a peaceful transfer to civilian governance in 1986, handing over power to Ahmed al-Mirghani and Sadiq al-Mahdi after elections. He further served as Chairman of the Islamic Call Organization from 1987, contributing to humanitarian efforts and interfaith initiatives across Africa, and was awarded the King Faisal International Prize in 2004 for his service to Islam.

Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab died of natural causes on October 18, 2018, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His legacy endures as a model of responsible leadership and dedication to Sudan’s stability and democratic ideals.

Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab assumed power in Sudan on April 6, 1985, following a military coup that ousted President Gaafar Nimeiry. The coup was triggered by widespread public dissatisfaction with Nimeiry’s authoritarian rule, economic decline, and the imposition of Islamic law. Swar al-Dahab led a transitional government and promised to restore civilian rule. He handed over power to an elected civilian government on April 30, 1986, after overseeing democratic elections.
