Valentine Esegragbo Melvine Strasser was born on April 26, 1967, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He rose to international attention as a young military officer and the head of state of Sierra Leone from 1992 to 1996. Strasser attended school at the Sierra Leone Grammar School in Freetown, a prestigious institution. After finishing his education, he enlisted in the Republic of Sierra Leone Military Forces in 1985 at the age of 18. As a junior officer, Strasser was stationed in Kailahun, in the Eastern Province, where he fought against the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels during the Sierra Leone Civil War.
In April 1992, at the age of 25, Strasser became the world's youngest head of state when he and a group of fellow soldiers overthrew the government of President Joseph Saidu Momoh. The coup was largely motivated by frustration over the government's inability to properly equip and support the military in its fight against the RUF rebels. Strasser and his colleagues, including Solomon Musa, Julius Maada Bio, and others, formed the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), which ruled Sierra Leone for the next four years.
Strasser's time in power was marked by attempts to bring peace to Sierra Leone and improve the economy. However, his regime also faced significant challenges, including allegations of human rights abuses, corruption, and difficulties in managing the ongoing civil war. Despite some successes in diplomacy and governance, Strasser's rule became increasingly unpopular.
In January 1996, Strasser was ousted in a palace coup led by his deputy, Brigadier Julius Maada Bio. The ouster occurred just a few months before democratic elections were scheduled, which eventually took place later that year. Following his overthrow, Strasser went into exile in Guinea and later moved to the United Kingdom, where he pursued law studies at the University of Warwick. However, he did not complete his studies and eventually returned to Sierra Leone.
Strasser lived a quiet and impoverished life in Sierra Leone in the years following his return, with reports indicating that he struggled with health issues and economic hardships. His legacy remains controversial in Sierra Leone, as some view him as a symbol of the turbulent era of military rule, while others remember him for his efforts to stabilize the country during a difficult period.

GOVERNING TIME LINE
Valentine Strasser assumed office as the military Head of State of Sierra Leone on April 29, 1992, after leading a coup that ousted then-President Joseph Saidu Momoh. At the age of 25, Strasser became one of the world’s youngest leaders, taking power with the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), a military junta. His leadership marked a turbulent period in Sierra Leone’s history, characterized by a mix of reformist promises and internal conflict. However, his tenure ended on January 16, 1996, when he was overthrown by another coup led by Brigadier General Julius Maada Bio. Strasser’s rule was marked by political instability, and his overthrow was a response to his increasingly autocratic governance and growing discontent within the military ranks.
