Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was a Nigerian politician who served as the President of Nigeria from May 29, 2007, until his death on May 5, 2010. Born on August 16, 1951, in Katsina State, Nigeria, Yar'Adua was a member of the Katsina royal family and the son of a prominent politician and educator, Alhaji Musa Yar'Adua. He attended the prestigious Almeda University in Cairo, Egypt, where he studied the natural sciences.
Yar'Adua began his political career as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was first elected as a member of the Katsina State House of Assembly in 1999 and later served as the Governor of Katsina State from 1999 to 2007. During his tenure as governor, he was known for his commitment to educational and infrastructural development, as well as efforts to address corruption within the state government.
In 2007, Yar'Adua was elected President of Nigeria in a controversial election marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities. His presidency was characterized by efforts to reform the Nigerian electoral system, address corruption, and improve the country’s infrastructure. However, his tenure was also marked by significant challenges, including frequent health issues and political unrest.
Yar'Adua's health problems became a major concern during his presidency. In November 2009, he traveled to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, and his prolonged absence from the country led to a power vacuum. His deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, assumed the role of Acting President in February 2010. Yar'Adua's condition worsened over time, and he died on May 5, 2010, after a prolonged illness.
Following his death, Goodluck Jonathan was formally inaugurated as President, continuing the policies and reforms initiated by Yar'Adua. Yar'Adua's presidency is remembered for his attempts to address key issues facing Nigeria, although his tenure was cut short by health problems and political challenges.
